COMMUNITY ARTS MENTORSHIP PROGRAMMING

It all started when…

I began working with the community of Stanley Mission, SK (located 485 km North of Saskatoon) for 5-weeks in January 2019 through a grant offered by the Saskatchewan Cultural Exchange Society (SCES). Together we are now developing a program called CAMP, which stands for Community Arts Mentorship Programming. We were awarded a grant from the Saskatchewan Arts Board that will see a full-year Musician in Residency Program operated in Stanley Mission for September 2019 - September 2020, as well as the TD MusiCounts grant which allows the purchase of instruments for the program. We are focusing on providing free music lessons for the community and mentoring members to job-shadow the program operations.

This will be the first year the mentorship program is running FULL-TIME in stanley mission, and there are exciting new partnerships with Sask Music and Saskatchewan Mental Health that will see this program expand to meet the needs of the entire community.

currently in STANLEY mission there are community fiddle LESSONS, COMMUNITY JAMS, music LESSONS of various INSTRUMENTS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AS WELL AS COMMUNITY MEMBERS RUNNING COFFEEHOUSE OPEN STAGES AND open JAMS. THIS PROJECT DEFINITELY NEEDS another year OF FULL TIME EFFORTS to be strong enough to stand alone, AND WE ARE committed to see it through in this community.

Pinehouse, Sk and canoe lake, sk are the next communities receiving music mentorship PROGRAMMING, and they will start october 19th 2020 (pinehouse) and january 2021 (canoe lake).

upcoming, completed and on-going Projects 2020/21

full-time music teacher position secured in stanley mission, C.A.M.P pilot community

A full-time Music Teacher Position is currently being split between 4 Professional musicians throughout the school year 2020-2021. This is a huge leap in CAMP and Music Mentorship, as funding is no longer Grant-Dependent, and has moved into the local community. By having 4 different music teachers through the year, this delivers a well-rounded education administering a variety of specialty instruments and teaching styles, which will appeal to a broader audience. As well, teachers will be able to return yearly to Stanley Mission, while being able to maintain their home art practices.

trauma-informed, CULTURALLY-SENSITIVE artist training course

ONLINE Feb/mar/april 2021 in-person july 9th - 11th

An Artist Training Course curriculum development was executed in July 2020. We are committed to preparing artists for residencies in remote, under-served and vulnerable communities in Saskatchewan. This way we can have more communities on the go! This would be two-fold one focusing on Mental Health First Aid; delivering trauma informed programming, recognizing vicarious trauma in yourself, what to do if someone discloses abuse or suicidal tendencies, understanding anti-social behaviour, developing mental health tools through the arts..etc, and the other Cultural Awareness and Residency; how to deliver community arts programming, understanding cultural appropriation, white privilege, residential school system, Treaty Education...etc. Stay tuned for dates and more information to follow, with sessions hopefully being offered in November 2020 in Saskatoon..
